    Very good

A fine choice for a relaxing holiday stay

In general: It's the second time we've stayed here (previously the Grosvenor and now the Abbey Sands Hotel) and the stay has been good. Go elsewhere if you're looking for pampering, luxury and a full in-hotel experience for those like us looking for a good base to explore Torquay and be able to relax it's ideal. Use of the pool is a great boon and the rooms - although a little dated - are clean and quiet.
Location and surroundings: You're about 5 minutes from Abbey Sands, Torquay's main sea front. But you're also closer to the Torre Abbey and Gardens and even the Harbourside isn't too far away. You can also walk up towards the top of Torquay town within about 15 minutes. All in all, a very good location.
Dining: Breakfast is a good, self service affair with both cooked and continental options available. We didn't take the evening meal options but from what we saw of the menu it looks to be high class cuisine. We were told there was a bar menu but we never saw it. In all, the advice is to plan to eat elsewhere.
Sports and leisure: Great outdoor swimming pool. Indoor swimming pool leaves a lot to be desired, however - too small and quite old.
Room: A great variety of rooms but keep in mind this is a very old Victorian hotel so don't be surprised if the floors aren't quite level and the walls aren't perfectly smooth! It all adds the character, though. Furniture can be dated and is mis-matched but this doesn't detract from it being cosy and quiet.
Useful tips: Be prepared to walk up and down steps when staying there! Parking is limited but if you book directly you can request a parking reservation. There is also additional parking around the back and staff can also provide free parking badges for close-by car parks when things are very busy.

There are two good points about this hotel and that is the friendly staff and location. I do not feel the pictures reflect the reality of this hotel unfortunately. We would normally put up with 1 or 2 things not being right but had to say something when everything was unsatisfactory. We are glad we only stayed 1 night and glad we were out of the room most of the time. We would have changed hotels if we didnt have small children in tow.

The family room we stayed in was not worth the money, it was very dirty and I spent all night wheezing. The ceramic tiles in the bathroom were nearly all cracked and my husband cut his toe! The hot tap hardly ever worked, the curtains were broken, stained and did not pull! the kettle kept sliding off its unsafe shelf and had to be moved. The chair and sofa were very old and dirty with massive rips and to top it all off the cot we ordered wasnt in there. When it arrived, surprise, it was dirty with a big hole. We quickly booked this hotel as it was a last minute booking and one room left and the pool and gym seemed apealing. However the gym had broken equiptment and my daughter wouldnt go in the pool as it was too deep everywhere!

    Great

Very helpful staff offering more information than just about the hotel

Slightly jaded could do with some refurbishment

    Perfect

Large clean room. Excellent breakfast served by polite staff - did not have to wait long before being served.

    Nice

It had a jacuzzi, which was dated and the jets quite weak, but still nice. Good location close to the beach, but really went for the restuarants. You have to go to The Elephant (We dined in the restaurant upstairs not the brasserie) - fantastic food at good prices (£35 for 2 courses and mid-range wine for £23/bottle) and it has a michelin star - relaxed atomosphere, with tables far apart - a very enjoyable evening. Absolutely amazing food!

hotel is dated, but cant really compain for £65/night incl breakfast. Was given a ground floor room near main street, which was a little noisy at times from passers-by. Also creeky floorboards from guests staying in room above. Partner found a hair in the cooked buffet breakfast so didnt eat.

    Nice

Location was good, but we alreay knew the area so knew that. Room was of a decent size if a little dated

Thought the 'Garden room resturant' where breakfast was served was very depressing. Quality of the towels and complementary toiletries was poor. Would have been much more disappointed if we had paid the published tarriff, but cosidering waht we did pay was not a bad hotel

    Very good

The staff were really friendly and relaxed. The Inn at the Grosvenor, the pub/restaurant attached to the hotel was wonderful. Relaxing even when busy and the staff once again were excellent and happy to be there. At the hotel, the sauna was being repaired so we couldn't use it - would have been nice to know this when we called to enquire about booking but it didn't spoil anything in the end. The indoor pool was good... although could have been a touch warmer! There was a lovely lounge area with a small bar and lots of comfy seating where we were able to unwind before dinner. All in all the rooms, bathrooms and corridors look a bit in need of an update but that is to be expected in an old building.

    Very good

The staff were very friendly and made you welcome. Location was great for shopping and night life.

The hotel was very clean just in need of a make over. Also it was catering for over 60s not for the younger generation.

    Very good

Pleasant and very good value. Very large and comfortable room. Well located and with free on-site parking.

Breakfast was a little slow ad quite basic. The hotel had recently changed hands and the manager did not know the 'Wi-Fi' password so whilst it was available according to the network connection I was unable to access it - very frustrating. The indoor swimming pool was not heated, which proved challenging in Dec.
